Yèvre-le-Châtel: An Undiscovered Gem Tucked Away in the Sologne Countryside

Yèvre-le-Châtel: An Undiscovered Gem Tucked Away in the Sologne Countryside

Who could resist the charm of the tiny medieval village of Yèvre-le-Châtel, only 90 km from Paris and 50 km from Orléans, listed as one of the ‘Most Beautiful Villages in France’ and once a royal stop-off on the road between Paris and Orléans? Meander through the shaded streets with their multi-coloured flowers and old limestone houses, stop off at the Romanesque church with its unfinished nave, or head up to its recently renovated 13th century fortress, surrounded by huge moats, 3-meter thick ramparts and flanked by four big towers.

In fact, it was thanks to this imposing and virtually unassailable stronghold that Yèvre-le-Châtel was one of the very few towns in the region to remain unconquered during the 100 Years’ War. Climb up to the top of towers and although you may be a bit out of breath, the reward is well worth the effort: an even more breathtaking view of the wheat fields of the Beauce region, the valleys of the Gâtinais and all the way down to the forest of Orléans.

This little village with its 240 inhabitants is not only steeped in history but also serves as a magnet for artists and is alive with exhibitions, concerts and performances of all types, so there’s always something exciting going on.

And for those of you with a sweet tooth, it’s worth noting that Yèvre-le-Châtel is just 7 km away from the town of Pithiviers, famous for its crisp and crunchy almond cakes based on a age-old ‘secret’ recipe so delicious that it’s now made its way around the world. Try one and you’ll see that you’ll soon be packing your bags to the brim with Pithiviers cakes made right on-the-spot to bring home as gifts for family and friends!
