The Château of Sully-sur-Loire

Surrounded by deep, water-filled moats, the Château of Sully-sur-Loire is an impressive sight with its high, pointed towers. The château's most illustrious owner was Maximilien de Béthune, Duke of Sully and Minister to King Henry IV of France.

An illustrious owner

The construction of the Château of Sully-sur-Loire dates from the end of the 14th century, but it was only in 1602 that Maximilien de Béthune, Duke of Sully and a well-known Minister to King Henry IV bought the seigneurie, or fiefdom, of Sully.

The Château of Sully-sur-Loire is formed of two distinct parts. On one side is the keep, a vast rectangular building measuring 39m by 16m and flanked by four imposing towers. On the other is a small château which was principally residential rather than defensive.

A number of famous figures from the history of France have stayed in this château, including Joan of Arc, Voltaire and King Louis XIV.

A remarkably furnished château

The château visit starts on the ground floor, where the tomb of the Duke of Sully is located, and continues all the way up to the rampart walk at the top of the keep, which is 15 metres high. Along the way visitors will discover the remarkable ceiling structure which resembles an upturned boat hull, built over 600 years ago.

The visit will lead you around approximately 15 rooms. In the apartments belonging to the Duke of Sully and his wife, the painted decoration and collections of pictures, tapestries and statues illustrate the magnificence of the period. In the room known as the Psyché room, remarkable 17th century tapestries depict the story of this mythological character.

Every year, the Château of Sully-sur-Loire offers guided visits and events for discovering the castle in a different way.
